A Family Compound shaped by Mijikenda settlement principles.
Along Kenya’s coast, the Mijikenda tribes built their lives around sacred forest clearings known as kaya — 11 of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These circular glades with 2 narrow access paths were home to clustered clan villages, each with its meeting hut, and a central space for the entire community.
For a holiday family compound in Kilifi, we’ve adapted these principles: a central clearing, buildings arranged in small clusters, dual access from road and beach, and spaces designed for gathering and connection — all deeply integrated with nature.
The aim of this project is to create an oasis of tranquility, integrated into the privileged natural context. A development centered around the idea of natural well-being; a place for the all the family members to re-connect and spend time together, but also to relax and reboot. The occupancy will vary with time, hosting different family members and friends, so the design will have to adapt to the family needs.
