One Way House
Lamu Island, Kenya

Year: 2012
Client: Private, Kenya
Area: 620 m2
Team: Iñigo Torrens
Status: Completed

In respecting the unique Swahili architecture of Lamu, we transformed this derelict building into three stories, all of which overlook the sea. A shop was created at the corner of the building to entice the passing trade.

The entrance opens into a classic courtyard where the main staircase welcomes guests. The first floor boasts several common areas such as a dining room, the swimming pool and a covered lounge, as well as two ensuite bedrooms. The second floor contains two more bedrooms designed with a terrace where one can observe island life as it passes by. Under the makuti roof on the top floor is the perfect place to spend a starry night, rain or shine.
